Compare · vs self-managed OpenShift

Same OpenShift. None of the operating burden.

Running OpenShift yourself means a 3–6 person platform team, upgrade weekends, and 24/7 on-call. Stakater Cloud delivers the same OpenShift — operated for you, EU-hosted, with the developer platform pre-wired.

About self-managed OpenShift

What is Self-managed OpenShift (DIY)?

Self-managed OpenShift is OpenShift you install, run and operate yourself — typically on bare metal, vSphere or a hyperscaler. Red Hat sells the subscription and ships the bits; everything else — cluster lifecycle, upgrades, capacity planning, day-2 ops, and the platform tooling above the cluster — is your team's responsibility.

Why teams switch

Three reasons teams move from self-managed OpenShift to Stakater Cloud.

01 / Reason

Get 3–6 platform engineers back

A production-grade self-managed OpenShift realistically needs 3–6 senior engineers across cluster ops, platform tooling, and on-call. Stakater Cloud replaces that team for a flat monthly fee — typically well below loaded salary cost — so your engineers can ship product instead.

02 / Reason

No more upgrade weekends

OpenShift upgrades mean operator compatibility checks, etcd backups, blast-radius planning, and after-hours change windows. We run every upgrade under SLA — pre-checks, rollback paths, change windows aligned with your business — with zero customer effort.

03 / Reason

Production-ready platform on day one

A self-built OpenShift platform takes 6–18 months to reach production parity — GitOps, CI/CD, secrets, observability, multi-tenancy, backup. Stakater Cloud ships all of it pre-wired and managed. Production-ready in under 15 minutes.

How Stakater Cloud compares.

The real alternative isn't switching cloud providers — it's spending 12–18 months building this yourself with an internal platform team.

Migration path

From self-managed OpenShift to Stakater Cloud in three steps.

A real migration plan, run alongside your team. No two-week sales pitch dressed up as discovery.

  1. 01 / Step

    Map your self-managed OpenShift workloads

We scope your existing self-managed OpenShift setup — clusters, workloads, data volumes, integrations, compliance posture. Honest assessment of what moves cleanly and what needs care.

  2. 02 / Step

Stand up the Stakater Cloud target

Your dedicated OpenShift cluster is provisioned in under 15 minutes, EU-hosted, with the full platform layer pre-wired — GitOps, CI/CD, observability, secrets, multi-tenancy.

  3. 03 / Step

    Migrate workloads with our SRE

Stakater SRE runs the migration alongside your team. Containerised workloads move first; data, integrations, and DNS cutover are scheduled around your risk tolerance.

Stakater Cloud vs self-managed OpenShift — FAQ

Honest answers, no marketing copy.

What does self-managed OpenShift actually cost compared to Stakater Cloud? +

The Red Hat subscription is only part of the bill. The real cost is 3–6 senior platform engineers (€150k–€250k loaded per head per year), on-call coverage, infrastructure, plus the opportunity cost of those engineers not building product. Stakater Cloud is a flat monthly subscription from €888/month with the platform team included.

We already hold Red Hat OpenShift subscriptions — what happens to those? +

Stakater is a Red Hat Premier Partner. We can advise on subscription transition, BYOL arrangements, and how your existing entitlements map to a managed Stakater Cloud cluster. Specifics depend on your current contract — book a call and we will scope it.

How do upgrades, CVE patching and operator updates compare? +

Self-managed means your team owns every OpenShift minor and z-stream upgrade, operator updates, RHCOS patches and CVE response. Stakater Cloud runs all of it under SLA with documented rollback procedures and change windows agreed with you. You approve the window; we do the work.

Can we migrate from self-managed without downtime? +

Yes for most workloads. We use OpenShift-native tooling — OADP/Velero for backups, OpenShift Migration Toolkit for cross-cluster moves — and run a hybrid period for stateful or sensitive workloads. Cutover is scheduled around your risk tolerance.

Will we lose customisations from our existing cluster? +

Most cluster-level customisations — RBAC, network policies, identity providers, ingress, image policies, custom operators — port across cleanly. We audit your current platform up front and call out anything that needs a non-standard arrangement before migration begins.

What SLA and uptime guarantee does Stakater Cloud offer? +

Stakater Cloud Managed OpenShift carries a 99.9% uptime SLA on the cluster control plane, with multi-AZ high availability for stricter workloads. SLA terms, credits and incident-response commitments are contractual — not a best-effort internal target like most self-managed setups.

Which certifications does Stakater Cloud hold? +

ISO 27001:2022 (information security) and ISO 9001:2015 (quality management), independently audited annually. Most self-managed OpenShift environments inherit the underlying infrastructure provider's certifications but lack independent certification of the platform-operations layer itself.

Are backups, DR, and compliance evidence included? +

Yes. Velero-based backup of cluster resources and persistent volumes is part of the managed platform, with documented restore procedures. We also provide audit-ready evidence packs (controls, change logs, access reviews) that customers reuse in their own GDPR, DORA and NIS2 audits — work that self-managed teams typically own end-to-end.
